Fukushima Podcast

Art Direction

"Fukushima" is a compelling BBC World Service podcast that explores the harrowing events of the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear disaster. The podcast takes the form of a dramatization, following a female journalist as she documents the misdirections and cover-ups that ultimately led to the catastrophic incident.

The Art Direction of the podcast revolves around two central motifs: the disaster itself and the characters involved. Additionally, a key aspect was to ensure that the story was told through the lens of a Japanese voice. To achieve this, we commissioned the talented artist Yoko Shimizo to illustrate the podcast cover. Her unique style draws inspiration from the ancient art of ukiyo-e while incorporating a modern twist. Shimizo's artwork expertly captures not only the cultural context of the setting but also the impending doom and dramatic essence of the show.
